Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.
Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.
Players will gain the option to question particular calls from the chair umpire, echoing the protocol currently in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development follows just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific decisions, such as:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a player can ask for.
Case in Point
An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where fans have sometimes been unsure if a ball was in or out.
Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
